Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

Laser refractive surgery is used to reduce a patient’s dependency on glasses or contacts. If you’re healthy, at least 21 years old, and your prescription hasn’t changed much in 2 years there’s a good chance you’re a candidate for surgery, free LASIK screenings. Measurements are taken at the screening to determine if you’re a candidate. If you’re not a good candidate for LASIK you may still be a candidate for a different (but similar) refractive procedure called PRK. Fortunately, technology is always changing. A patient who was not a candidate in the past could be a candidate now!

Am I too old to have LASIK?

LASIK does not eliminate the need for reading glasses after the age of 40. This applies to everyone! So, if you are approaching or over 40 years old, you will need to consider options like monovision (correcting one eye for distance and one eye for near) or reading glasses to see comfortably at near.

How long does the surgery take?

Laser Refractive surgery only takes about 10 minutes per eye. However, the morning of your procedure you will be at the surgery center for about 2 hours. Since patients are given medicine to stay relaxed they should not drive after LASIK and need a driver. Plan to spend the afternoon following surgery taking a nice nap or resting quietly at home.

What is the recovery time for LASIK?

Recovery time after surgery varies depending on the patient and procedure. Some patients experience clearer vision the same day of surgery! Most patients return to work within 2 days, although some may have blurry vision and discomfort for one week following their surgery. All patients will experience dry eye symptoms during the first 3 months after their procedure. We encourage patients to use artificial tears as much as possible while their eyes heal.

What is your success rate of LASIK?

According to a recent FDA study, 98% of patients achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better! Though we cannot guarantee any surgical patient will be completely free of glasses or contact lenses, our results are consistent with those numbers and exceed national averages.
